A good long range shooter never neglects the basics. After all, advanced skills are the basics mastered ; )
THLR Calling Shots Targets…
With that in mind, a great skill to practice is the ability to call your shots.
When I was on the sniper team, this is a drill I went through regularly as there are so many benefits.
Back then, we just shot at round circles and when we moved forward to assess our targets we would note everything in our log book.
Now…you can still do that if you wish but I recently came across these Calling Shots targets (and the associated Calling Shots card and Shooter Error card) designed by THLR and they are great and simplify the process.
The cards themselves are credit card sized and easily fit in my range bag and simplify the recording process.
The Calling Shots Targets themselves are sized accordingly in terms of MOA so even though they are designed for 100m, the targets are still 1MOA.
This shooting drill not only teaches you to accurately call your POI but it also helps to ingrain the muscle memory for achieving NPA (natural point of aim) AND IMPORTANTLY, can also identify potential shooter errors when used in conjunction with the THLR Shooter Error Cards.
These targets can be used for other shooting drills and your imagination is your only limitation.
For example, I like to use them for speed work and target ID drills.
For speed, I’ll choose a row (say 1MOA) and then shoot that row as quickly as possible. you have to balance speed with accuracy though. If you go to fast you will throw shots outside the 1MOA target.
For Target ID, I’ll nominate the rows with a number (1-4) then I have somebody call one of those numbers along with the shape. I have to correctly identify the row and the shape.
You can add a speed element to this drill also.
The Calling Shots Targets are available for download using the link at the bottom of this page.

My Final thoughts…
This exercise is fantastic and is VERY beneficial to shooters and I HIGHLY recommend it.
This is especially important if you don’t have access to a “Long Range” as you can practice the majority of the skills needed for Long Range shooting without leaving the 100m range.
THLR’s targets and associated cards make completing the exercise so much simpler.D
